Travel Tips for Women: How to Recognize and Deal with a "Red Pill" FanaticReal Strategies for Disarming a Red Pill Fanatic Without Ruining Your TripBy Estefanía Muriel for Ruta Pantera on 8/12/2026 10:30:37 AM |

In a hostel along the route, a traveler explains to you, over coffee and guitar, "the science" of why women in your country "aren't worth what they used to be." He smiles as if he's doing you a favor. The scene repeats itself with variations—on a night bus, in a bar, in a hiking group—because the discourse he uses didn't originate there: he travels with those who repeat it.
It's called the red pill , the "red pill" taken from the film The Matrix (1999): the metaphor used by online communities to describe their own "awakening" to a society that, according to them, favors women. As documented by journalist Andreas Noll on Deutsche Welle in August 2025, this subculture—known as the manosphere —is already global and also operates as a business: researcher Brigitte Temel explained that these gurus "take money from the pockets of insecure men." In Mexico, the phenomenon has its own name: "El Temach" fills entire theaters promising to "restore masculinity." Gatopardo magazine documented in 2024 how psychotherapist Héctor Cerezo Huerta explains the success of this discourse: he individualizes collective problems with phrases like "you don't have a partner because you don't know any seduction strategies." Understanding this mechanism is the first step; the second—the one that truly matters—is recognizing the character before the conversation drags on. The Profile You Will Learn to Recognize in Two Sentences The first clue is the vocabulary. A "redpilled" man rarely says "my ex dumped me": he says he was "dumped" or that she gave him a shit test . He divides women into "authentic" or "gold diggers," "traditional" or "modern," and sooner or later he throws out words like hypergamy (the idea that women only seek higher-status men) or gynocentrism (the belief that society revolves around them). These aren't arguments: they're passwords for recognizing each other among "mates," as these communities call themselves. The second clue is the tone: she doesn't argue, she reveals. She presents each statement as if she's doing you a favor by sharing a hidden truth that you "just don't see." She rarely cites an actual study; she appeals to "biology" or "human nature" as sufficient proof. And if something doesn't fit with her theory, she doesn't revise it, she adjusts it: ask her why her example doesn't apply to you, and you'll likely hear the genre's signature line—"you're not like the others"—a compliment that actually confirms the rule she just invented. |

The third clue emerges when you question it: the reaction. A skeptical comment isn't received as an opinion, but as proof that "the system" has already programmed you, or as an opportunity to cite some figure in the field—Andrew Tate in English, "El Temach" in Spanish—as an unquestionable authority. Child psychiatrist Yann Poncin, from the Yale Child Study Center, explained to Parents magazine in 2026 that this vocabulary often feels "quite obvious typically in the language they use" because these are borrowed opinions, not their own. Vocabulary, tone, and reaction: with these three signs, you already know where you stand, without needing to hear the entire conversation. How to Defuse the Conversation Without Jeopardizing Your Trip Arguing with data rarely works, because the other person's goal isn't to debate but to confirm their identity in front of an imaginary group of "friends." Asking with genuine curiosity—"Where did you hear that?", "How has that idea worked for you?"—is usually more disarming than any statistic, because it forces the other person to explain instead of reciting a script. Psychologist Jill Murphy, from Common Sense Media, recommends a variation of this same tactic: "Let them share their opinion without giving them yours"—a way to keep the conversation open without giving ground or escalating it. Light humor and changing the subject also work: "Interesting theory, I'd rather talk about where we're going tomorrow" closes the door without validating the argument or turning a hostel or a night bus into an ideological battleground. Changing the subject isn't cowardice, it's strategy: nobody owes you a full explanation of why you're not going to debate with a stranger on a trip that only lasts a few days. Pay attention to the audience as well: if the conversation takes place in front of other travelers, the discussion is likely seeking group approval rather than convincing you. In that case, a short, neutral phrase works best—"I don't share that view, but to each their own"—which leaves the door closed without creating a confrontation that you'll find difficult to resolve later, especially if you share accommodation or transportation with that person. When the Conversation Gets Tense When the tone changes—becoming insistent, mocking, or questioning your life choices, your clothes, or why you're traveling alone—the priority shifts from educating anyone to getting away. Seeking the company of others, changing tables, going for a walk, or simply saying "I'm going to sleep" are legitimate and sufficient responses. You don't need to win the argument to be safe. Setting a clear boundary—"I'd rather not talk about this," said just once and without needing to justify it—cuts many conversations short before they escalate. Repeating this calmly, without engaging in provocations, works better than any clever retort: those looking for a fight quickly get bored when they find no resistance to fuel. Sharing the experience with other travelers is also a practical tool: naming the pattern in a WhatsApp group, in a backpackers' forum or simply upon arriving at the next hostel helps those who come after recognize it more quickly and not waste time —or peace— trying to understand what is happening. No female traveler is obligated to correct a stranger. For so many women, travel remains an act of freedom and discovery; it shouldn't become a constant test of patience in the face of discourses that seek a small victory in every conversation. Recognizing the pattern, naming it, and sharing it among female travelers is also a form of collective care. Therein lies the opportunity, especially in Latin America: to transform the hospitality that characterizes the region into an increasingly safe, informed, and supportive space for those who travel through it. |
