Sunday Bad Bunny SundayBy Christopher Engholm for Ruta Pantera on 2/6/2026 1:20:55 PM |

| He’s lost a lot of sleep. He’s nervous. He says he can’t even concentrate at dominoes. A lot is on his shoulders. This is not your normal Super Bowl Sunday. It’s not a wardrobe malfunction moment right now. Swifties won’t do. With what’s gone down in Minneapolis last month, the tension in the air is palpable. This Bowl will be consumed by the entire country, and Trump isn’t coming because “it’s too far.” The truth is he can’t bear to see what’s afoot as a result of his presidency. It’s a hyper-watershed moment. Puerto Rico. (Remember Trump tossing paper towels to clean up after a hurricane?) And now all of Latin America is contending with the new “Donroe Doctrine,” and its threat of militant U.S. hegemony in the hemisphere. Cuba’s fate is now dangling in the cross hairs. And Venezuela awaits a viable Marshall Plan, unlikely to emerge since the US doesn’t even have an AID office anymore and most of its State Department staff who might have the expertise to nation build have been fired. |

Bad Bunny’s hypnotic ritual trance vamps are just what the MAGA brainpan could use right now, but alas, his oeuvre may come up short in turning ICE to stone. America needs a new alchemy to cut through our wild hypocrisy and stubborn disregard for truth and reality. Can a musician-magician from a US imperial outpost provide the mojo?
Or will Trump, Inc. use the occasion to put the knife to pop activism and enter blazing, nabbing children and deporting brown people to Dillie or CECOT? No one knows. But everyone cares. Do it Bad Bunny! Wake up the soul of America. Make us one with the hemisphere of nations. Make us feel again. |
