Carrovelismo in Pampa del Leoncito

By Jazmin Agudelo for Ruta Pantera on 10/9/2025 10:24:39 AM

This isn’t a futuristic thrill ride—it’s carrovelismo, or land sailing, in the Pampa del Leoncito, a unique natural arena in Barreal, San Juan Province, Argentina. Nestled in the Calingasta Valley at the foot of the Andes, this 12-kilometer-long by 4-kilometer-wide white expanse offers an exhilarating blend of adventure, nature, and freedom. Often described as sailing on dry land, the activity draws wind sports enthusiasts, families, and curious travelers to experience the sensation of gliding over a surface as smooth as a frozen lake but baked under the Argentine sun. From Ancient Winds to Modern Thrills Carrovelismo, also known as land yachting or blokarting, has roots dating back centuries, with early forms appearing in ancient China and Egypt where sails were attached to wheeled vehicles for transport across flat terrains. In its modern incarnation, the sport gained popularity in Europe in the early 20th century, particularly in Belgium and France, where enthusiasts raced on beaches and salt flats. It arrived in Argentina in the 1990s, finding a perfect home in the country’s vast pampas and dry lake beds, where consistent winds and flat surfaces create ideal conditions. Pampa del Leoncito, located within El Leoncito National Park, emerged as a prime spot due to its geological uniqueness. Formed from ancient lake sediments, this clay plain—once the bed of a prehistoric lagoon—spans about 48 square kilometers at 1,900 meters above sea level. Its hard, cracked surface, polished by wind and rare rains, provides minimal friction, allowing carts to achieve remarkable speeds. The area’s constant zonda winds, blowing from the Andes at 30-50 km/h and gusting higher, make it one of the best land sailing venues in South America, comparable to Nevada’s Black Rock Desert or Spain’s Tarifa beaches. The sport’s introduction to Pampa del Leoncito is credited to local pioneers like Victor "Don Toro" Sívori, who began offering guided sessions in the early 2000s, transforming a casual pastime into a structured tourism activity. Initially, carts were homemade, but today they feature lightweight frames, bicycle wheels, and sails inspired by windsurfing. The national park’s protection since 2002 has ensured sustainable use, limiting access to designated areas to preserve the fragile ecosystem. Over the years, carrovelismo has grown in popularity, attracting international visitors and even hosting informal races, solidifying Barreal as Argentina’s land sailing capital.
Gliding with the Wind Carrovelismo in Pampa del Leoncito is an accessible adventure that requires no prior experience, making it ideal for beginners and thrill-seekers alike. Sessions typically last 2 hours, starting with a 30-minute theoretical instruction on handling the cart, understanding wind directions, and safety protocols. Participants don helmets and harnesses, then take control of a Blokart-style cart—a lightweight, three-wheeled vehicle with a sail that can be adjusted like a boat’s. As you push off, the wind fills the sail, and the cart accelerates smoothly across the plain’s hard clay surface, which feels like skating on ice but with the warmth of the Andean sun. Speeds can reach 60-120 km/h depending on gusts, offering an adrenaline rush comparable to windsurfing or kitesurfing, but on solid ground. The 360-degree views are breathtaking: the snow-capped Andes to the west, including glimpses of Aconcagua, and the vast, white expanse stretching endlessly, dotted only by occasional dust devils. Reviewers describe it as liberating and meditative, with the wind’s whisper and the cart’s gentle hum creating a sense of flight. Tandem carts allow pairs to ride together, perfect for families or couples, while solo carts offer independence. The activity is weather-dependent, thriving on steady breezes but halting in strong gusts or rain, which is rare in this arid region. Sunset sessions are particularly magical, with the plain glowing golden and the mountains silhouetted against the sky. Operators, Costs, and Practicalities Several local operators make carrovelismo accessible and safe. Don Toro Carrovelismo, run by Victor Sívori, is a favorite, offering personalized sessions with a focus on fun and instruction. Blokart - Don Lisandro provides high-quality carts and group options, emphasizing the sport’s international standards. Both operate from the edge of the pampa, with sessions available year-round, though summer (December-March) sees the strongest winds. Costs range from ARS 5,000 to 10,000 per person (about USD 50-100 as of 2025), including gear, instruction, and insurance. Bookings are recommended, especially in peak season; contact via Instagram or local tourism offices. Minimum age is typically 12, with no upper limit as long as you're fit; tandem rides accommodate younger participants. Access Pampa del Leoncito via a short drive from Barreal, about 20 km south on Route 149, then a gravel road—suitable for regular vehicles but watch for dust. No entry fee to the plain, but respect park rules: no off-road driving, and leave no trace.
