Tejo in Bogotá, Colombia — Traditional Colombian sport full of skill and funBy Christopher Engholm for Ruta Pantera on 8/18/2025 6:01:27 PM |

| A Game Rooted in History Tejo, also known as turmequé, is one of Colombia’s most emblematic sports. It dates back to the indigenous Muisca people, who played a ritualistic game by throwing a golden disk called zepguagoscua toward a target. Over the centuries, the disk became a metal puck, and tejo evolved into a national pastime. In 2000, the Colombian Congress officially declared tejo as the national sport. Later, in 2019, it was recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage. Today, tejo stands as a vibrant symbol of Colombia’s rich cultural identity and communal joy. | ||||

Why Tejo Is So Popular in Bogotá Once reserved for rural settings, tejo has made its way into Bogotá’s urban scene. Now you can play it in lively bars, trendy clubs, and traditional courts, often paired with local food, music, and craft beer. Its blend of heritage and modern fun has attracted a new generation of fans. | |||
