Aspen Gay Ski Week

America's Oldest LGBTQ+ Celebration

By Jazmin Agudelo for Ruta Pantera on 1/14/2026 5:22:34 AM

In the very heart of the Rocky Mountains, Aspen prepares to welcome one of its most vibrant and long- standing traditions. From January 11 to 17, 2026,Aspen Gay Ski Week (AGSW) celebrates its 49th edition as the oldest and largest annual LGBTQ+ ski event in the United States. Thousands of participants from around the world converge on this iconic Colorado resort to enjoy intense days on the slopes of Aspen Snowmass and nights filled with parties, concerts, comedy, film, and themed dinners. More than a winter festival, it is an affirmation of diversity, inclusion, and solidarity in one of the world’s most prestigious ski destinations.

What began in the 1970s as informal gatherings among local friends and visitors following an incident in a bar that helped spark the fight for gay rights in Aspen has evolved into a global reference point. In 1979, the city became the first in Colorado to approve anti-discrimination protections for the LGBTQ+ community, a milestone born in part from that pioneering spirit. Today, organized by AspenOUT, AGSW not only offers a unique vacation experience but also serves as one of the region’s largest nonprofit fundraisers, directing proceeds to local programs focused on support, education, and anti-bullying efforts.

The Perfect Balance

The program blends the best of skiing and snowboarding with a diverse cultural agenda. During the day, participants take advantage of Aspen Snowmass’s four mountains Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk, and Snowmass for epic runs, guided lessons, and special activities. Highlights include the traditional “Mountain Du Jour,” daily gatherings on different mountains where groups and clubs come together with creative costumes, rainbow flags, and spectacular displays that turn the slopes into a pride parade on snow.

Après-ski is a daily ritual: happy hours at iconic hotels such as Limelight Aspen (the official host venue), yoga sessions to relax muscles after time on the mountain, and legendary brunches featuring drag queens. At night, the energy rises with themed parties at iconic venues like Belly Up Aspen where the “Shiny Disco Balls” event promises a full-on dance explosion along with live concerts, comedy shows, film screenings, and communal dinners designed to foster genuine connections. Events such as the Downhill Costume Contest, drag bingo, and opening receptions complete the circle between sport, art, and community.

This year, the festival arrives just after Wintersköl, adding even more color to the start of the high season. With attendance expected in the thousands, AGSW attracts seasoned skiers, beginners, allied families, and travelers seeking an inclusive and celebratory atmosphere. The blend of daytime adrenaline and nighttime celebration creates an experience that goes beyond Tourism it is an opportunity to build community within a breathtaking natural setting.

The event also highlights the progress achieved. In a context where LGBTQ+ visibility remains essential, AGSW demonstrates how sport and culture can drive lasting social change. For many attendees, returning year after year is a reaffirmation of a safe and joyful space, while for newcomers it represents a warm welcome into a tradition that has inspired similar events around the world.

As the dates approach, Aspen is painted in rainbow hues over white snow. Those planning to attend can find the full schedule, ticket options, and practical recommendations at gayskiweek.com. In a winter that promises abundant snowfall and boundless energy, Aspen Gay Ski Week invites travelers to experience pride at its highest Level with speed on the slopes and warmth in the celebration.
