Amazonía ecuatoriana bajo presión petrolera y disputa ambiental creciente

Líderes indígenas advierten sobre el impacto ambiental y social de la expansión del petróleo en la selva.

La tensión entre desarrollo económico y protección ambiental vuelve a ocupar el centro del debate en Ecuador. En la vasta Amazonía del país, comunidades indígenas y organizaciones ambientales advierten que la expansión de la industria petrolera podría profundizar un legado de contaminación y conflictos territoriales que se remonta a más de medio siglo.

En las últimas semanas, cerca de treinta mujeres indígenas de diferentes nacionalidades amazónicas realizaron un recorrido por zonas petroleras del norte del país, particularmente en la provincia de Sucumbíos. La iniciativa —conocida por activistas como “toxitour”— buscaba mostrar de primera mano los efectos que décadas de explotación petrolera han dejado en ríos, bosques y comunidades. Durante el recorrido, las participantes observaron tuberías que atraviesan la selva, mecheros de gas que arden constantemente y corrientes de agua contaminadas cerca de instalaciones petroleras.

Para muchas de estas líderes, el viaje fue una advertencia sobre lo que podría ocurrir en sus propios territorios si se aprueban nuevos proyectos de exploración. Varias comunidades de provincias amazónicas como Pastaza y Napo enfrentan propuestas de expansión petrolera que, según organizaciones indígenas, no han contado con procesos adecuados de consulta.

La presencia de la industria petrolera en la Amazonía ecuatoriana comenzó a consolidarse a finales de la década de 1960, cuando se descubrieron importantes reservas cerca de la ciudad de Nueva Loja, conocida también como Lago Agrio. Desde entonces, el territorio se convirtió en uno de los principales centros de producción petrolera del país. Sin embargo, el desarrollo energético también trajo profundas transformaciones ambientales y sociales, incluyendo deforestación, contaminación de suelos y cambios drásticos en las economías locales.

Diversos estudios y reportes señalan que la contaminación histórica en la región se originó en parte durante las primeras décadas de explotación. Investigaciones ambientales indican que, entre los años sesenta y noventa, grandes volúmenes de residuos tóxicos y derrames de crudo se liberaron en la selva amazónica, afectando ríos, suelos y comunidades cercanas a los campos petroleros.

Para los pueblos indígenas, los efectos de esta actividad no se limitan al deterioro ambiental. Los ríos amazónicos, que tradicionalmente han sido fuente de agua potable, pesca y transporte, se han convertido en algunos casos en espacios de preocupación sanitaria. En ciertas comunidades cercanas a campos petroleros, los habitantes han dejado de beber agua de los ríos por temor a la contaminación y deben comprar agua potable, algo impensable décadas atrás.

El debate sobre el petróleo también está profundamente ligado a la política nacional y al futuro económico del país. Ecuador depende en gran medida de los ingresos petroleros para financiar su presupuesto público y sostener su balanza comercial. Sin embargo, la expansión del sector enfrenta creciente resistencia social y legal.

En 2023, los ciudadanos ecuatorianos protagonizaron uno de los hitos ambientales más importantes de la región al votar en un referéndum para detener la explotación petrolera en el bloque 43 del Parque Nacional Yasuní, uno de los lugares con mayor biodiversidad del planeta. La decisión fue interpretada por muchos analistas como un precedente histórico en la lucha entre conservación ambiental y extracción de recursos.

A pesar de ese resultado, el gobierno ecuatoriano continúa explorando nuevas estrategias para atraer inversiones energéticas. Planes recientes contemplan licitaciones para decenas de bloques petroleros en la Amazonía, algunos de los cuales se superponen con territorios indígenas. Líderes de diferentes nacionalidades han denunciado que estos proyectos podrían violar el principio de consulta previa establecido tanto en la Constitución ecuatoriana como en convenios internacionales sobre derechos indígenas.

Los expertos en clima advierten que el debate en Ecuador refleja un dilema más amplio que atraviesa a muchos países ricos en recursos naturales. Mientras el mundo busca reducir su dependencia de los combustibles fósiles para enfrentar el cambio climático, regiones como la Amazonía siguen siendo vistas como fuentes estratégicas de petróleo.

Para las comunidades indígenas amazónicas, la discusión va más allá de la economía o la política energética. Se trata de la supervivencia de territorios que sostienen culturas, idiomas y formas de vida ancestrales. En palabras de varias líderes que participaron en el recorrido por las zonas petroleras, el objetivo no es solo denunciar la contaminación, sino evitar que la historia se repita en otros rincones de la selva.

En ese contexto, la Amazonía ecuatoriana se ha convertido en uno de los escenarios más simbólicos del debate global sobre el futuro del planeta: un territorio donde las decisiones sobre petróleo, biodiversidad y derechos indígenas podrían definir no solo el destino de la región, sino también el equilibrio ambiental de todo el hemisferio.
