El boicot canadiense a EE. UU. ya mueve miles de millones y redefine el turismo regional

Datos actualizados revelan caídas históricas, pérdida de ingresos y un cambio estructural en los flujos de viajeros

Lo que comenzó como una reacción política se ha transformado en uno de los cambios más significativos del turismo en Norteamérica en décadas. El boicot de viajes de Canadá hacia Estados Unidos ya no es una percepción, sino una realidad respaldada por datos contundentes que muestran caídas sostenidas en visitantes, reducción del gasto y un redireccionamiento masivo del turismo hacia otros destinos.

Las cifras más recientes confirman la magnitud del fenómeno. En 2025, Estados Unidos recibió alrededor de 4 millones menos de visitantes canadienses, lo que representa una caída cercana al 22% interanual, siendo Canadá históricamente su principal mercado internacional.

El impacto no se detuvo allí. A inicios de 2026, los datos muestran que la tendencia se profundiza. Los viajes por carretera, que constituyen la mayoría de las visitas, cayeron aproximadamente 27% interanual, mientras que los viajes aéreos descendieron cerca de 18%. En paralelo, otros registros sitúan la caída en desplazamientos terrestres en torno al 26,8%, confirmando que la contracción es consistente en distintos periodos.

Las decisiones de los viajeros también reflejan un cambio de mentalidad. Alrededor del 23% de los canadienses ha cancelado viajes ya planificados a Estados Unidos, mientras que encuestas más amplias indican que hasta 56% ha modificado o reconsiderado sus planes para evitar el país. Este comportamiento no es marginal, sino masivo y sostenido.

El efecto económico es inmediato y profundo. Las pérdidas para la industria turística estadounidense ya superan los 4.5 mil millones de dólares, con estimaciones que incluso alcanzan los 5.7 mil millones al considerar impactos indirectos. Una parte importante de ese dinero corresponde a los llamados “snowbirds”, jubilados canadienses que tradicionalmente pasan temporadas largas en estados como Florida o California, y que ahora están optando por destinos alternativos.

Al observar el comportamiento del mercado, se evidencia una redistribución del turismo global. Las reservas hacia Estados Unidos han caído alrededor de 17%, mientras que destinos como el Caribe, Europa y México experimentan aumentos significativos en la demanda canadiense. Incluso sectores específicos muestran caídas dramáticas: reservas en parques nacionales de EE. UU. han disminuido hasta un 93% en algunos casos, y agencias reportan reducciones del 30% en paquetes turísticos hacia destinos estadounidenses.

El impacto también se siente a nivel local. En regiones fronterizas, la caída de visitantes alcanza el 21%, afectando directamente el comercio, el empleo y los ingresos fiscales. En destinos turísticos específicos, como estaciones de esquí, las reservas canadienses han disminuido hasta un 41%, evidenciando que el fenómeno atraviesa distintos segmentos del mercado.

Más allá de los números, este cambio revela una transformación estructural. En 2024, los canadienses gastaron aproximadamente 20.5 mil millones de dólares en Estados Unidos, lo que dimensiona la magnitud del flujo económico que ahora se está desplazando hacia otros mercados. La combinación de tensiones políticas, percepciones de seguridad, políticas comerciales y cambios en la imagen del destino ha redefinido las decisiones de viaje.

El resultado es claro: el turismo entre Canadá y Estados Unidos, uno de los corredores más importantes del mundo, está siendo reconfigurado. Lo que antes era un flujo casi automático ahora depende de factores políticos, percepción internacional y confianza del viajero.

En este nuevo escenario, el boicot canadiense no solo representa una pérdida económica inmediata, sino una señal de cómo el turismo global está evolucionando. Las decisiones de viaje ya no responden únicamente a precios o cercanía, sino a valores, percepciones y contexto geopolítico. Y en ese cambio, miles de millones de dólares están cambiando de destino.
