FIFA Confirms Iran’s 2026 World Cup Participation Amid U.S. Tensions

Infantino Assures Iranian Presence Amid a Sensitive Geopolitical Scenario and Doubts Over Tournament Security

FIFA has confirmed that Iran’s national team will “certainly” participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite rising geopolitical tensions and the ongoing conflictual context between Iran and the United States, one of the tournament’s host countries alongside Mexico and Canada. The statement by FIFA President Gianni Infantino has sparked wide international debate due to the political, logistical, and security implications of hosting an Iranian delegation on U.S. soil amid deteriorating diplomatic relations.

Infantino reiterated that Iran’s participation is not in question, as the country qualified through sporting merit, which under FIFA regulations grants it the automatic right to compete. In his public remarks, he stressed that football must remain separate from international political conflicts and function as a global space for unity even in times of heightened tension.

The statement carries particular weight in a sensitive context. In recent months, relations between Washington and Tehran have deteriorated significantly, marked by episodes of indirect military confrontation, increased sanctions, hostile rhetoric, and growing international concern over a potential escalation. This environment has fueled doubts about the practical feasibility of Iran’s participation in an event partly hosted in the United States.

The 2026 World Cup will be the first edition featuring 48 teams, significantly increasing organizational complexity, delegation mobility, and security requirements. In this context, Iran’s presence introduces additional challenges, particularly regarding visas, entry protocols, delegation protection, and intergovernmental coordination.

According to reports from international agencies such as Associated Press, CBS News, Fox Sports, and The Washington Post, FIFA has held discussions with authorities from the host countries to ensure that all qualified teams can enter and compete under safe conditions. However, these discussions are taking place alongside political uncertainty, leaving the issue open to possible adjustments should the international situation worsen.

Infantino has repeatedly insisted that sport should not be used as a tool for political exclusion. In this sense, he has defended Iran’s participation as an earned sporting right and argued that excluding the team would go against the spirit of the tournament. He has also stated that he has been in contact with the Iranian team, emphasizing their desire to compete regardless of external tensions.

Despite FIFA’s official stance, the issue continues to generate debate among political analysts, international security experts, and diplomatic circles. Some argue that while participation is confirmed on sporting grounds, real entry conditions into the host country could become a critical issue if tensions between Iran and the United States escalate further.

The 2026 World Cup, to be held in North America, is already considered one of the most complex sporting events in modern history due to its size, multi-country format, and geopolitical sensitivity. Iran’s situation adds another layer of complexity to a tournament that, beyond sport, unfolds within a global environment of rising tensions.

In this regard, FIFA faces the challenge of balancing compliance with its sporting regulations and managing a highly politicized international environment. The assertion that Iran will participate “with certainty” aims to project stability, but the coming months will be decisive in determining whether that assurance holds without changes.
