El Mundial de 2026 pone a prueba la seguridad de Norteamérica

México, Estados Unidos y Canadá aceleran preparativos para recibir a millones de aficionados

Por primera vez en la historia, tres países compartirán la organización de una Copa Mundial de la FIFA. México, Estados Unidos y Canadá recibirán conjuntamente el torneo de 2026, una edición récord que contará con 48 selecciones nacionales, 104 partidos y una audiencia global estimada en más de 5.000 millones de espectadores. Nunca antes un evento deportivo había requerido un nivel de coordinación transfronteriza comparable en América del Norte.

La magnitud económica también es extraordinaria. Estudios de FIFA y organismos económicos estiman que el torneo podría generar más de US$40.000 millones en actividad económica, además de cientos de miles de empleos temporales vinculados al turismo, la hotelería, el transporte, la construcción y los servicios. Se espera que más de 6 millones de aficionados asistan a los partidos durante el campeonato.

Estados Unidos asumirá la mayor parte de la operación. El país albergará 78 de los 104 encuentros, incluida la final, y recibirá partidos en 11 ciudades sede, entre ellas Nueva York, Los Ángeles, Miami, Dallas y Atlanta. Solo el área metropolitana de Nueva York-Nueva Jersey espera recibir más de un millón de visitantes relacionados con el torneo.

México hará historia al convertirse en el primer país en organizar tres Copas del Mundo después de 1970 y 1986. La Ciudad de México, Guadalajara y Monterrey serán las sedes mexicanas. Las autoridades estiman que el torneo podría aportar miles de millones de dólares a la economía nacional y atraer a cientos de miles de turistas internacionales. Sin embargo, la seguridad continúa siendo una prioridad. CNN reportó que el gobierno mexicano trabaja en operativos especiales que incluyen vigilancia reforzada en aeropuertos, corredores turísticos, estadios y sistemas de transporte.

Canadá recibirá encuentros en Toronto y Vancouver. Aunque el país presenta algunos de los índices de criminalidad más bajos entre los anfitriones, enfrenta otros desafíos relacionados con capacidad hotelera, transporte urbano y costos para visitantes. Toronto y Vancouver figuran entre las ciudades más costosas de América del Norte para alojamiento turístico.

Las diferencias entre los tres países son notables. Estados Unidos cuenta con la infraestructura deportiva más grande y moderna del torneo. Canadá ofrece algunos de los indicadores de seguridad urbana más sólidos del continente. México, por su parte, combina costos de viaje relativamente más bajos con una de las culturas futbolísticas más apasionadas del mundo. Esa diversidad representa una fortaleza para el torneo, pero también exige estrategias de seguridad adaptadas a realidades muy distintas.

Uno de los mayores retos será la movilidad. Los aficionados podrían recorrer miles de kilómetros entre sedes ubicadas en tres países, múltiples zonas horarias y algunos de los aeropuertos más transitados del planeta. Las autoridades prevén niveles récord de tráfico aéreo, cruces fronterizos y demanda hotelera durante varias semanas consecutivas.

Más allá del fútbol, el Mundial de 2026 se ha convertido en una prueba para la capacidad de Norteamérica de actuar como una región integrada frente a un evento global. Cuando comience el torneo, millones de visitantes no solo evaluarán los partidos y los estadios. También observarán qué tan seguros, eficientes y preparados están México, Estados Unidos y Canadá para recibir al mundo.
