El Salvador Protects a Volcano That Attracts Thousands of Travelers Each Year

In an era when destinations around the world compete to attract more visitors, El Salvador has chosen a different strategy: protecting one of its most valuable natural treasures before tourism success begins to damage it. Authorities recently announced the temporary closure of El Boquerón National Park to carry out conservation, maintenance, and environmental restoration work, a decision that reflects a growing trend among some of the world's most visited natural destinations.

Although it may seem like a simple measure, the park holds a special place in Salvadoran tourism. Located about 1,800 meters (5,900 feet) above sea level on the summit of the San Salvador Volcano, El Boquerón features one of Central America's most spectacular volcanic craters. This giant natural amphitheater measures approximately 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles) in diameter and more than 550 meters (1,800 feet) deep, large enough to fit several football stadiums inside.

What many visitors do not realize is that the landscape is relatively young in geological terms. Inside the massive crater lies a smaller cone known as "Boqueroncito," which formed during the volcanic eruption of 1917. That eruption released lava, ash, and gases that dramatically reshaped the area and served as a reminder that the volcano remains geologically active.

The decision to temporarily close the park reflects a reality that is becoming increasingly common worldwide. Nature tourism has experienced remarkable growth over the last two decades. Before the pandemic, the world recorded more than 1.4 billion international tourist arrivals annually, with a growing share of travelers seeking experiences related to volcanoes, hiking, wildlife observation, and protected natural areas.

However, success also brings pressure. International studies show that heavily used trails can lose up to 30 centimeters (12 inches) of soil through erosion under certain conditions. Soil compaction, vegetation loss, and increased waste are among the most common challenges faced by natural areas experiencing high visitor volumes.

El Salvador possesses unique advantages for ecotourism. Although it is the smallest country in mainland Central America, it packs an extraordinary diversity of ecosystems into just 21,041 square kilometers (8,124 square miles). In only a few hours, travelers can move from world-class surfing beaches to cloud forests, volcanic lakes, and biodiversity-rich nature reserves.

One of the country's most fascinating facts is that El Salvador is often called the "Land of Volcanoes." It is home to more than 20 major volcanic formations, several of which can be seen from highways and urban areas. Few places on Earth offer such a concentration of volcanoes within such a compact territory.

In addition, the country lies within the Pacific Ring of Fire, a vast geological zone that contains approximately 75 percent of the world's active volcanoes and accounts for nearly 90 percent of global earthquakes. This location has shaped much of El Salvador's geography, biodiversity, and history.

The country's biodiversity is equally impressive. Despite its small size, El Salvador is home to more than 500 bird species, a number that exceeds that of several much larger European nations. For birdwatching enthusiasts, the country has emerged as an increasingly attractive destination thanks to its accessibility and ecological diversity.

Conservation also has a strong economic dimension. According to the World Travel & Tourism Council, nature-based tourism is among the fastest-growing segments of the global travel industry. Various studies estimate that ecotourism generates more than US$300 billion annually worldwide, and demand continues to rise as travelers seek authentic and sustainable experiences.

In the case of El Boquerón, every visitor contributes to the local economy by supporting restaurants, cafés, guides, transportation providers, hotels, and small businesses in nearby communities. A degraded ecosystem not only harms biodiversity but can also reduce a destination's attractiveness and threaten the livelihoods of families who depend on tourism.

The strategy of temporarily closing natural areas to allow ecological recovery is not unique to El Salvador. Countries as diverse as Thailand, the Philippines, Costa Rica, New Zealand, and the United States have implemented similar measures in recent years. In many cases, the results have been positive, leading to visible environmental improvements and enhanced visitor experiences.

Another interesting aspect is the role played by the forests surrounding the volcano. These ecosystems help capture carbon, protect water resources, regulate temperatures, and prevent soil erosion. A single mature tree can absorb approximately 22 kilograms (48 pounds) of carbon dioxide per year, making forests valuable allies in addressing climate change.

The restoration efforts are also designed to ensure that future generations can continue enjoying one of the country's most iconic landscapes. Sustainable tourism is no longer simply about attracting more visitors; it is about ensuring that natural resources remain healthy and accessible for decades to come.

The temporary closure of El Boquerón may be an inconvenience for some travelers, but it represents an investment in the future. Every restored trail, protected tree, and recovered ecosystem helps preserve one of El Salvador's most important tourism assets. In a world where many destinations struggle with the consequences of overtourism, protecting nature may be the most effective way to promote it.
