El Salvador Protege un Volcán que Atrae Miles de Viajeros Cada Año

El cierre temporal de un parque nacional demuestra la importancia de la conservación para el turismo.

En una época en la que muchos destinos compiten por atraer más visitantes, El Salvador ha optado por una estrategia diferente: proteger uno de sus tesoros naturales más valiosos antes de que el éxito turístico termine dañándolo. Las autoridades anunciaron el cierre temporal del Parque Nacional El Boquerón para realizar trabajos de conservación, mantenimiento y restauración ambiental, una decisión que refleja una tendencia creciente en algunos de los destinos naturales más visitados del mundo.

Aunque pueda parecer una medida simple, el parque ocupa un lugar especial dentro del turismo salvadoreño. Ubicado a unos 1.800 metros sobre el nivel del mar, en la cima del volcán de San Salvador, El Boquerón alberga uno de los cráteres más impresionantes de Centroamérica. El gigantesco anfiteatro natural tiene aproximadamente 1,5 kilómetros de diámetro y más de 550 metros de profundidad, dimensiones suficientes para que varios estadios de fútbol pudieran caber en su interior.

Lo que muchos visitantes desconocen es que el paisaje actual es relativamente joven en términos geológicos. Dentro del enorme cráter existe otro más pequeño conocido como "Boqueroncito", formado durante la erupción de 1917. Aquel evento lanzó lava, cenizas y gases volcánicos que transformaron significativamente la zona y recordaron que el volcán continúa siendo una estructura geológicamente activa.

La decisión de cerrar temporalmente el parque responde a una realidad cada vez más común. El crecimiento del turismo de naturaleza ha sido extraordinario durante las últimas dos décadas. Antes de la pandemia, el mundo registraba más de 1.400 millones de viajes internacionales al año, y una parte creciente de esos viajeros buscaba experiencias relacionadas con volcanes, senderismo, observación de fauna y espacios protegidos.

Sin embargo, el éxito también genera presión. Estudios internacionales muestran que los senderos más visitados pueden perder hasta 30 centímetros de suelo por erosión en determinadas condiciones climáticas. La compactación del terreno, la pérdida de vegetación y el aumento de residuos son algunos de los problemas más frecuentes en áreas naturales con alta afluencia de visitantes.

El Salvador posee características únicas para el turismo ecológico. Aunque es el país más pequeño de Centroamérica continental, concentra una sorprendente diversidad de ecosistemas en apenas 21.041 kilómetros cuadrados. En pocas horas es posible pasar de playas de surf reconocidas internacionalmente a bosques montañosos, lagos volcánicos y reservas naturales de alta biodiversidad.

Uno de los datos más curiosos es que El Salvador es conocido como la "Tierra de los Volcanes". El país cuenta con más de 20 estructuras volcánicas principales, varias de ellas visibles desde carreteras y centros urbanos. Pocos lugares del mundo permiten observar tantos volcanes en un territorio tan compacto.

Además, el país forma parte del Cinturón de Fuego del Pacífico, una inmensa franja geológica que concentra aproximadamente el 75 % de los volcanes activos del planeta y cerca del 90 % de los terremotos registrados en el mundo. Esta ubicación ha moldeado gran parte de la geografía, la biodiversidad y la historia salvadoreña.

La biodiversidad también sorprende. A pesar de su tamaño, El Salvador alberga más de 500 especies de aves, una cifra superior a la de varios países europeos mucho más extensos. Para los aficionados al avistamiento de aves, el país se ha convertido en un destino emergente gracias a la facilidad para acceder a distintos ecosistemas en distancias relativamente cortas.

La conservación tiene además un fuerte componente económico. Según el Consejo Mundial de Viajes y Turismo, el turismo de naturaleza es uno de los segmentos de mayor crecimiento en la industria global. Diversos estudios estiman que el ecoturismo mueve más de US$300.000 millones anuales y continúa expandiéndose a medida que los viajeros buscan experiencias más auténticas y sostenibles.

En el caso de El Boquerón, cada visitante genera actividad económica para restaurantes, cafeterías, guías, transportistas, hoteles y pequeños negocios ubicados en las comunidades cercanas. Un ecosistema degradado no solo afecta la biodiversidad; también puede reducir el atractivo turístico y los ingresos de cientos de familias que dependen indirectamente de esta actividad.

La estrategia de cerrar temporalmente áreas naturales para permitir su recuperación no es exclusiva de El Salvador. Destinos tan diversos como Tailandia, Filipinas, Costa Rica, Nueva Zelanda y Estados Unidos han implementado medidas similares en los últimos años. En muchos casos, los resultados han sido positivos, con mejoras visibles en la calidad ambiental y en la experiencia de los visitantes.

Otro aspecto interesante es el papel de los bosques que rodean el volcán. Estas áreas ayudan a capturar carbono, conservar fuentes de agua, regular temperaturas y proteger los suelos frente a la erosión. Un solo árbol maduro puede absorber alrededor de 22 kilogramos de dióxido de carbono al año, convirtiéndose en un aliado natural frente al cambio climático.

Los trabajos de restauración también buscan garantizar que futuras generaciones puedan seguir disfrutando de uno de los paisajes más emblemáticos del país. La sostenibilidad turística ya no consiste únicamente en atraer más visitantes; implica asegurar que los recursos naturales permanezcan saludables durante décadas.

El cierre temporal de El Boquerón puede parecer una interrupción para algunos viajeros, pero representa una inversión en el futuro. Cada sendero restaurado, cada árbol protegido y cada ecosistema recuperado ayudan a preservar uno de los principales atractivos turísticos de El Salvador. En un mundo donde muchos destinos luchan contra los efectos del exceso de visitantes, proteger la naturaleza puede ser la mejor forma de promoverla.
