El Salvador Protege um Vulcão que Atrai Milhares de Viajantes Todos os Anos

O fechamento de um parque nacional mostra a importância da conservação para o turismo.

Em uma época em que destinos ao redor do mundo competem para atrair mais visitantes, El Salvador escolheu uma estratégia diferente: proteger um de seus tesouros naturais mais valiosos antes que o sucesso turístico comece a ameaçá-lo. As autoridades anunciaram o fechamento temporário do Parque Nacional El Boquerón para realizar trabalhos de conservação, manutenção e restauração ambiental, uma decisão que reflete uma tendência crescente entre alguns dos destinos naturais mais visitados do planeta.

Embora possa parecer uma medida simples, o parque ocupa um lugar especial no turismo salvadorenho. Localizado a cerca de 1.800 metros acima do nível do mar, no topo do Vulcão de San Salvador, El Boquerón abriga uma das crateras mais impressionantes da América Central. Esse gigantesco anfiteatro natural possui aproximadamente 1,5 quilômetro de diâmetro e mais de 550 metros de profundidade, dimensões suficientes para acomodar vários estádios de futebol em seu interior.

O que muitos visitantes não sabem é que a paisagem atual é relativamente jovem em termos geológicos. Dentro da enorme cratera existe um cone menor conhecido como “Boqueroncito”, formado durante a erupção de 1917. Esse evento lançou lava, cinzas e gases vulcânicos que transformaram significativamente a região e lembraram que o vulcão continua sendo uma estrutura geologicamente ativa.

A decisão de fechar temporariamente o parque reflete uma realidade cada vez mais comum em todo o mundo. O turismo de natureza registrou um crescimento extraordinário nas últimas duas décadas. Antes da pandemia, o planeta contabilizava mais de 1,4 bilhão de chegadas internacionais por ano, e uma parcela crescente desses viajantes buscava experiências relacionadas a vulcões, trilhas, observação de fauna e áreas naturais protegidas.

No entanto, o sucesso também traz desafios. Estudos internacionais mostram que trilhas muito frequentadas podem perder até 30 centímetros de solo por erosão em determinadas condições. Compactação do terreno, perda de vegetação e aumento de resíduos estão entre os problemas mais comuns enfrentados por áreas naturais que recebem grandes volumes de visitantes.

El Salvador possui vantagens únicas para o ecoturismo. Embora seja o menor país da América Central continental, concentra uma impressionante diversidade de ecossistemas em apenas 21.041 quilômetros quadrados. Em poucas horas, é possível passar de praias famosas pelo surfe para florestas montanhosas, lagos vulcânicos e reservas naturais ricas em biodiversidade.

Um dos fatos mais curiosos é que El Salvador é frequentemente chamado de “Terra dos Vulcões”. O país possui mais de 20 formações vulcânicas principais, várias delas visíveis a partir de rodovias e áreas urbanas. Poucos lugares no mundo oferecem uma concentração tão grande de vulcões em um território tão compacto.

Além disso, o país está localizado no Círculo de Fogo do Pacífico, uma vasta zona geológica que concentra cerca de 75% dos vulcões ativos do planeta e aproximadamente 90% dos terremotos registrados no mundo. Essa localização moldou grande parte da geografia, da biodiversidade e da história salvadorenha.

A biodiversidade também impressiona. Apesar de seu pequeno tamanho, El Salvador abriga mais de 500 espécies de aves, um número superior ao de vários países europeus muito maiores. Para os observadores de aves, o país tornou-se um destino emergente graças à facilidade de acesso a diferentes ecossistemas em curtas distâncias.

A conservação também possui uma forte dimensão econômica. Segundo o Conselho Mundial de Viagens e Turismo, o turismo de natureza está entre os segmentos que mais crescem na indústria global. Diversos estudos estimam que o ecoturismo movimenta mais de US$ 300 bilhões por ano em todo o mundo, e a demanda continua aumentando à medida que os viajantes buscam experiências autênticas e sustentáveis.

No caso de El Boquerón, cada visitante contribui para a economia local ao apoiar restaurantes, cafeterias, guias turísticos, transportadoras, hotéis e pequenos negócios das comunidades vizinhas. Um ecossistema degradado não afeta apenas a biodiversidade; também pode reduzir a atratividade do destino e ameaçar a renda de centenas de famílias que dependem do turismo.

A estratégia de fechar temporariamente áreas naturais para permitir sua recuperação não é exclusiva de El Salvador. Países como Tailândia, Filipinas, Costa Rica, Nova Zelândia e Estados Unidos implementaram medidas semelhantes nos últimos anos. Em muitos casos, os resultados foram positivos, com melhorias visíveis na qualidade ambiental e na experiência dos visitantes.

Outro aspecto interessante é o papel das florestas que cercam o vulcão. Esses ecossistemas ajudam a capturar carbono, proteger recursos hídricos, regular temperaturas e prevenir a erosão do solo. Uma única árvore adulta pode absorver aproximadamente 22 quilos de dióxido de carbono por ano, tornando-se uma importante aliada no combate às mudanças climáticas.

Os trabalhos de restauração também têm como objetivo garantir que as futuras gerações possam continuar desfrutando de uma das paisagens mais emblemáticas do país. O turismo sustentável não consiste apenas em atrair mais visitantes, mas em assegurar que os recursos naturais permaneçam saudáveis e acessíveis por décadas.

O fechamento temporário de El Boquerón pode representar um inconveniente para alguns viajantes, mas é, na verdade, um investimento no futuro. Cada trilha restaurada, cada árvore protegida e cada ecossistema recuperado ajuda a preservar um dos principais patrimônios turísticos de El Salvador. Em um mundo onde muitos destinos enfrentam os efeitos do excesso de visitantes, proteger a natureza pode ser a melhor forma de promovê-la.
