Estados se afastam da feira de Trump e surge uma questão para o turismo dos EUA

A ausência de vários estados na Great American State Fair reacende o debate entre turismo e política.

À medida que os Estados Unidos se preparam para celebrar o 250º aniversário de sua independência, uma das iniciativas mais ambiciosas promovidas pelo presidente Donald Trump enfrenta obstáculos inesperados. A chamada Great American State Fair, concebida como uma gigantesca exposição nacional em Washington D.C., com pavilhões dos 50 estados e territórios, começou a perder participantes antes mesmo de abrir suas portas.

Autoridades do Oregon, Washington e Carolina do Norte confirmaram que não participarão do evento, enquanto a Pensilvânia ainda mantinha dúvidas sobre sua possível presença. Embora as razões oficiais estejam centradas principalmente nos custos, alguns representantes estaduais também expressaram preocupação com o caráter cada vez mais político de uma celebração que inicialmente foi apresentada como uma homenagem nacional inclusiva.

A controvérsia surge em um momento particularmente importante para a indústria do turismo dos Estados Unidos. Aniversários nacionais costumam se transformar em oportunidades excepcionais para promover destinos, atrair visitantes internacionais e fortalecer o turismo doméstico. Eventos como o Bicentenário de 1976 geraram um aumento significativo nas viagens culturais e patrimoniais dentro do país, beneficiando cidades, museus, parques históricos e pequenas comunidades.

A Great American State Fair foi concebida precisamente com esse objetivo. Os organizadores imaginaram uma espécie de exposição universal americana, onde cada estado pudesse apresentar sua cultura, gastronomia, história, paisagens e atrações turísticas. Entre as propostas apresentadas estavam uma réplica do Álamo para o Texas, experiências inspiradas no Antelope Canyon para o Arizona, exposições de paleontologia para Montana e atividades interativas relacionadas às tradições de diferentes estados.

Do ponto de vista turístico, o conceito tinha enorme potencial. Milhões de visitantes que chegariam a Washington para as celebrações poderiam descobrir destinos que normalmente não considerariam para futuras férias. A promoção conjunta dos estados poderia funcionar como uma grande vitrine nacional, capaz de distribuir melhor os fluxos turísticos para além dos destinos tradicionais, como Nova York, Flórida ou Califórnia.

No entanto, a crescente politização do projeto ameaça ofuscar esses benefícios. Diversos artistas inicialmente anunciados para as celebrações cancelaram sua participação, alegando que o evento havia adquirido uma identidade mais partidária do que o esperado. Posteriormente, Trump anunciou que lideraria pessoalmente a inauguração da feira, aumentando ainda mais a associação entre o evento e sua figura política.

Para os especialistas em turismo, esse tipo de controvérsia representa um desafio importante. Grandes eventos turísticos costumam ter mais sucesso quando conseguem projetar uma imagem ampla e diversa, permitindo a participação de públicos com diferentes sensibilidades políticas, culturais e sociais. Quando uma celebração nacional é percebida como vinculada a uma corrente política específica, corre o risco de reduzir sua capacidade de mobilização.

Os números econômicos ajudam a compreender o que está em jogo. O turismo contribui com mais de um trilhão de dólares anuais para a economia dos Estados Unidos e sustenta milhões de empregos diretos e indiretos. Eventos de grande escala não apenas geram receitas para hotéis, restaurantes e operadores turísticos, mas também fortalecem a imagem internacional do país e estimulam futuras viagens.

A situação também reflete uma tendência mais ampla observada em diversas partes do mundo. Cada vez mais governos utilizam grandes celebrações nacionais para reforçar narrativas políticas, enquanto os organismos de turismo tentam manter mensagens mais inclusivas, focadas na cultura, no patrimônio e na diversidade. Encontrar o equilíbrio entre esses dois objetivos nem sempre é simples.

Os organizadores do Freedom 250 insistem que todos os estados estarão representados de alguma forma, mesmo que alguns governos estaduais decidam não participar oficialmente. Segundo seus porta-vozes, as histórias, tradições e culturas de cada estado continuarão fazendo parte da exposição por meio de organizações turísticas, empresas locais ou instituições culturais.

Ainda assim, a ausência de alguns estados poderá afetar a percepção pública de um projeto concebido para simbolizar a unidade nacional. O desafio será especialmente relevante considerando que a celebração busca comemorar um dos marcos mais importantes da história americana: os 250 anos da Declaração de Independência.

Do ponto de vista turístico, a questão central é saber se os visitantes internacionais enxergarão a feira como uma celebração da diversidade cultural dos Estados Unidos ou como um evento marcado principalmente pela atual polarização política. A resposta poderá influenciar tanto a participação do público quanto a imagem que o país projetará durante uma de suas mais importantes comemorações históricas.

Além das disputas políticas, o potencial turístico continua sendo considerável. Washington D.C. espera receber milhões de visitantes durante as celebrações do semiquincentenário. Museus, monumentos, hotéis, restaurantes e atrações históricas poderão se beneficiar de um aumento significativo na demanda turística. A questão é se a Great American State Fair conseguirá se transformar em um símbolo de unidade nacional ou se acabará sendo lembrada como mais um episódio da crescente polarização política dos Estados Unidos.
