Nepal’s Glacier Disaster Puts Argentina’s Andes Back in the SpotlightWhy Glacier Protection Matters to TravelersThe tragedy in the Himalayas on August 26 has brought international attention back to a part of the mountain landscape that travelers often experience as scenery but rarely consider as a critical natural system: glaciers. A collapse of ice and mountain debris triggered a devastating flood in the area near the Nepal-Tibet border, destroying infrastructure and affecting communities, workers, and travelers. The disaster has also renewed questions about how countries should protect increasingly vulnerable high-altitude environments. |
