HEMISPHERE ---------------------------4742TIPS & ADVICE

At 60, a New Adventure Begins! Travel Tips and Benefits That Help You Go Further

Discover Lesser-Known Discounts, Passenger Rights, and Smart Ways to Explore the Three Americas for Less.

Imagine exploring Mexico’s colonial towns, sailing among Caribbean islands, discovering Costa Rica’s extraordinary biodiversity, or watching the Canadian Rockies unfold from a train window. Now imagine having more time to enjoy these places, choosing your own pace, and taking advantage of benefits that can reduce some travel expenses.

Turning 60 can open an exciting new chapter of exploration, but there is no international card that guarantees discounts in every country, nor is there one universal age at which special fares begin. Some programs start at 60, others at 62 or 65, and many depend on residency, identification, and the provider’s terms.

The real advantage lies in knowing where to look. A rail discount, a reduced admission fee, or a well-supported passenger claim can free up money for an excursion, an extra night, or an experience that initially seemed outside your budget. Here are some opportunities and strategies worth exploring before planning your next trip across the three Americas.

Mexico: A Card That Can Open More Doors

Mexico has one of the region’s best-known benefit programs for older adults: the credential issued by the National Institute for Older Adults (INAPAM). People aged 60 and older who meet the enrollment requirements can access discounts at participating businesses and service providers, including some offering transportation, cultural activities, recreation, and tourism-related services.

The range of benefits makes a little research worthwhile. Travelers visiting several cities may find savings on public transportation, buses, and cultural attractions, depending on current agreements. These discounts do not always appear on booking platforms, so asking the provider directly before paying can make a difference.

One detail many visitors overlook is that being 60 or older and visiting Mexico does not automatically qualify someone for INAPAM benefits. The credential is subject to official eligibility and documentation requirements. International visitors should ask individual museums, tour operators, and businesses whether they offer separate senior rates.

Before traveling, check the current benefits directory and confirm which documents each provider accepts. You can review the program through the official INAPAM website.

United States and Canada: Explore North America by Train

Not every great North American journey needs to happen by plane. Train travel can turn the journey itself into part of the experience. Instead of concentrating on driving or connecting flights, passengers can enjoy the scenery, read, relax, and reach the centers of some cities without an additional trip from a distant airport.

There are also specific rail discounts worth knowing about. Amtrak offers a 10% discount on most rail fares to passengers aged 65 and older. On certain international services operated jointly by Amtrak and VIA Rail Canada, the senior discount begins at age 60.

That difference can create an interesting opportunity for travelers who have not yet turned 65. Someone aged 62, for example, may qualify for a discount on a specific international service but not for Amtrak’s standard senior discount on domestic routes. Enter your correct age when searching for tickets and compare the result with other promotions. The general promotional fare may be cheaper, and restrictions can apply to certain services and sleeping-car accommodations.

Canada also offers promotions for older passengers. VIA Rail has advertised fares for travelers aged 65 and older that require advance purchase and apply only to specified fares, classes, and travel dates. Because promotions and conditions can change, check the current offer before building your itinerary around it.

When comparing options, look beyond the discount percentage. Calculate the final fare, journey duration, baggage costs, and transportation to and from the station. A promotional ticket is not automatically the cheapest choice for every trip.

Check the conditions at Amtrak and VIA Rail Canada.

U.S. National Parks: Check Residency Requirements Before You Buy

America’s national parks can be the highlight of an entire trip, from the canyons of the Southwest to forests, deserts, and mountain landscapes. If you plan to visit several parks, researching admission passes in advance can help you estimate your budget.

The U.S. National Park Service offers special passes to people aged 62 and older who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Options include annual and lifetime senior passes. These are not universal discounts for all international visitors, so travelers from other countries should check the admission fees that apply to them.

It is also important to distinguish between park admission covered by a pass and other expenses, such as camping, guided excursions, or specific services. Not every additional cost is necessarily included.

If several parks are on your itinerary, compare the cost of individual admissions with the pass for which you qualify. That simple calculation can help you decide whether purchasing one makes financial sense.

Official information is available through the U.S. National Park Service.

United States: A 24-Hour Rule Worth Knowing

Finding an attractive fare to Miami, New York, or Los Angeles can make you want to book immediately. But selecting the wrong date or itinerary can create complications if you do not act quickly.

In the United States, for tickets purchased at least seven days before departure, airlines must offer one of two options: allow cancellation for a full refund within the first 24 hours or hold the reservation at the quoted price for that period. They are not required to offer both options.

The rule does not mean every ticket can be changed free of charge. It also does not apply to bookings made through travel agencies or third-party platforms in the same way it applies to airline reservations.

If you spot an error immediately after booking, check the applicable policy and contact the correct provider without delay. In some circumstances, canceling under the applicable rule and purchasing a new ticket may be more convenient than paying a change fee, although the new fare could have increased.

Find the details through the U.S. Department of Transportation.

When a Flight Is Canceled, Knowing the Rules Matters

A cancellation can disrupt much more than the journey between two cities. You may have a prepaid hotel night, an excursion in the Andes, or a Caribbean cruise departing the next day. In these situations, the first option offered by an airline may not explain every alternative available to you.

Canada has passenger-protection rules covering information, rebooking, refunds, and, under certain conditions, compensation. The applicable remedy depends on the reason for the disruption, the length of the delay, and other regulatory requirements.

Brazil also has rules covering delays, cancellations, and passenger assistance. The services airlines must provide depend on the circumstances and the time limits established by the regulations. Do not assume that every delay automatically qualifies for financial compensation or that all airlines must offer exactly the same solution.

If a disruption occurs, keep notifications, booking details, and receipts for related expenses. Ask the airline to explain your options and save its response in writing. If you booked your hotel or excursion separately, review those providers’ cancellation policies as well. Passenger rights against an airline do not automatically guarantee refunds for other services.

Consult Canada’s Air Passenger Protection Regulations and the Brazilian National Civil Aviation Agency’s passenger information.

Brazil and Airport Assistance: Asking for Help Can Make the Journey Easier

Large airports can involve long walks, transfers between terminals, and extended waiting periods. For some travelers, the biggest challenge is not the flight itself but navigating the airport, reaching the departure gate on time, and managing a connection comfortably.

Brazil has specific accessibility rules for air passengers who require special assistance. The regulations cover different needs and include provisions for older passengers in applicable circumstances. This does not mean that everyone aged 60 or older needs assistance; it means procedures exist for those who do.

If you need help moving through the airport, boarding, or completing a connection, notify the airline in advance and confirm how assistance will be arranged for each leg of the journey. Requesting help does not necessarily mean using a wheelchair. The important thing is to explain what you actually need.

This is particularly useful when an itinerary involves multiple airlines. Do not assume that assistance requested for the first flight will automatically be coordinated for every subsequent flight.

Baggage and Transfers Can Eat Into Your Savings

A very low airfare can become much less attractive once you add a checked bag, seat selection, transportation from a distant airport, or an overnight stay during a connection. On a multi-country itinerary, these expenses can accumulate without being obvious at first.

The solution is to compare the total cost of the trip, not just the price shown in the first search result. Check which baggage is included, how much it costs to reach your accommodation from the airport, and whether the schedule will force you to pay for an additional night.

Pack with possible delays in mind, too. Keep important documents, necessary medication, and essential items that would be difficult to replace in your carry-on. Check airline restrictions on liquids, batteries, and other items before packing.

A careful comparison may reveal that a slightly more expensive flight is actually better value because it includes the baggage you need or avoids a difficult connection.

Travel Insurance: Compare the Coverage, Not Just the Price

An insurance policy’s terms can matter more than its initial cost, especially when a trip combines several countries, outdoor activities, or destinations far from major cities.

Before purchasing a policy, review medical expense limits, emergency assistance, medical evacuation where applicable, and conditions relating to pre-existing conditions. Check whether your planned activities are covered and what procedures you must follow if you need medical attention during the trip.

One detail travelers sometimes overlook is how to request assistance. Some policies require you to contact an assistance center before using certain medical services, except in emergencies. Knowing this in advance can prevent complications later.

Do not assume that coverage included with a credit card or booking is sufficient. Request the full terms, confirm exclusions, and keep assistance phone numbers somewhere accessible, even without an internet connection.

Traveling Outside Peak Dates Can Open Up More Options

If you have flexibility over your travel dates, compare different departure days before booking. Airfares, accommodation prices, and excursion costs can vary with school holidays, public holidays, major events, and each destination’s tourist season.

However, low season does not always guarantee the best weather or the lowest prices for every service. In the Caribbean, weather conditions deserve attention; in mountain regions, road conditions and excursion availability can be decisive. An attractive fare loses value if the main activity you came for is unavailable when you arrive.

Compare several dates and calculate the full cost of your itinerary, including the experiences you want to enjoy. If your plans could still change, check cancellation conditions for hotels and excursions as well. Sometimes paying a little more for a flexible reservation is a sensible decision.

Cultural Discounts Are Worth Asking About, Too

Museums, monuments, guided tours, and local attractions may offer senior rates, but the conditions vary widely. Some establishments set the minimum age at 60, others at 65, and certain benefits depend on residency or the presentation of specific identification.

Before visiting a museum in Washington, an archaeological site in Mexico, or a cultural attraction in a South American city, check the official admission price and ask whether a senior rate is available. Find out whether you must buy your ticket online, purchase it at the ticket office, or present identification at the entrance.

If you plan to visit several attractions, add up their individual prices and compare them with any city passes available. These passes are not always a good deal; their value depends on the attractions included and how many you actually intend to visit. The best savings come from a plan that matches the experiences you genuinely want.

A New Chapter of Discovery Across the Americas

From the Andes and Central America’s nature reserves to Mexico’s historic cities, Caribbean beaches, and North America’s national parks, our hemisphere offers destinations for a wide range of interests and budgets.

There is no universal benefit that guarantees cheaper travel simply because you have reached a certain age. What does exist is a combination of local discounts, specific rail fares, passenger rights, and informed planning that can help you make better use of your time and money.

Before booking, verify the minimum age for each benefit, confirm whether it applies to international visitors, compare the final price, and keep the documents associated with every purchase. These simple steps can prevent unnecessary expenses and make it easier to resolve problems if plans go wrong.

Your next adventure could be a few hours from home or on the other side of the continent. The goal is not to chase every promotion, but to find the opportunities that genuinely apply to you and devote more of your budget to the experiences that make a trip memorable.
