Puerto Vallarta stretches along Mexico’s Pacific coast in the state of Jalisco, where the waters of Banderas Bay meet the foothills of the Sierra Madre. Once a small fishing village known as Las Peñas, the city grew into one of Mexico’s best-known beach destinations while retaining a strong Mexican identity in its historic streets, food, art and waterfront neighborhoods. Its international reputation accelerated in the 1960s after John Huston filmed The Night of the Iguana nearby, bringing Hollywood attention to a place that was still relatively unknown outside Mexico. Today, Puerto Vallarta combines beaches and jungle, traditional neighborhoods and sophisticated resorts, nightlife and a deeply established local culture. The Malecón, Old Vallarta And The Bay The best introduction to Puerto Vallarta begins in the Historic Center, where cobblestone streets descend toward the sea. The Malecón is the city’s most recognizable promenade, lined with sculptures, galleries, restaurants and views across Banderas Bay. Nearby, the Romantic Zone has a more intimate atmosphere, with small hotels, cafés, bars and restaurants around streets leading to Los Muertos Beach and its distinctive pier. The city is also a destination for people who want to spend time on the water. Boat trips leave for secluded beaches and coves, while kayaking, snorkeling, diving and paddleboarding provide ways to explore the bay. From December through March, humpback whales migrate into Banderas Bay, making whale watching one of Puerto Vallarta’s most distinctive seasonal experiences. For a quieter day away from the urban waterfront, visitors can travel south to Mismaloya, where jungle-covered mountains meet the Pacific, or continue by boat to places such as Yelapa, a small coastal community accessible from Puerto Vallarta by sea. Los Arcos, a group of dramatic granite formations and a protected marine area near Mismaloya, is another popular destination for snorkeling and diving. |

Food, Markets And Local Life Puerto Vallarta’s food scene goes well beyond resort dining. The Cuale Municipal Market is a good place to sample everyday Mexican dishes, fresh fruit and traditional snacks, while restaurants throughout the city range from casual taquerías to contemporary kitchens and international dining rooms. Seafood is naturally central to the local table, with ceviche, grilled fish, shrimp and octopus appearing alongside tacos, pozole and other regional dishes. The destination has also developed into one of Mexico’s major culinary centers. In 2026, the calendar includes events such as Vallarta Nayarit Gastronómica in October and the Festival Gourmet International in November, while local markets and restaurants provide opportunities to experience the food scene throughout the year. Puerto Vallarta also has a well-established LGBTQ+ community and is recognized as one of Mexico’s most welcoming destinations for LGBTQ+ travelers. The Romantic Zone, particularly around Olas Altas and Los Muertos, is the center of much of this nightlife and hospitality scene. |

Nature Beyond The City The combination of ocean and mountains is one of Puerto Vallarta’s greatest advantages. The Sierra Madre begins almost immediately behind the urban area, creating a landscape of tropical forest, rivers and waterfalls. The Vallarta Botanical Garden, about 30 kilometers south of downtown, protects native and tropical plant collections along trails through the mountains and is one of the region’s most worthwhile excursions. Adventurous travelers can hike, zip-line, ride horses or explore mountain rivers, while those looking for a slower experience can simply take a boat to a beach outside the main resort areas. The result is a destination where a beach vacation can easily become a combination of nature, food, culture and outdoor exploration. |

| Weather, Access And Where To Stay Puerto Vallarta is warm throughout the year. The rainy season generally runs from June through October, when afternoon showers and thunderstorms are more common. November through May is generally drier, making this the most popular period for visitors seeking sunshine and outdoor activities. Winter is also the prime season for whale watching. The easiest way to arrive is through Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport (PVR), which has extensive domestic and international connections. Puerto Vallarta is also accessible by road from Guadalajara, with the newer highway making the journey faster and more comfortable than in the past. Cruise ships regularly call at the city’s maritime terminal as part of Pacific itineraries. Accommodation ranges from hostels and simple guesthouses to boutique hotels and large beachfront resorts. Current hotel data shows typical rates around US$100 per night for three-star properties and about US$222 for four-star hotels, while five-star properties average around US$308, although prices vary substantially by season and location. December through February is among the busiest periods, while summer and early autumn generally offer lower rates. |

| Practical Tips A stay of three to five days allows enough time to explore the Historic Center and Malecón, spend time on the beaches, experience the food scene and take at least one excursion into the bay or mountains. Bring lightweight clothing, sunscreen, insect repellent and comfortable shoes for the hills and cobblestone streets. During the rainy season, a light waterproof layer is useful, particularly for outdoor excursions. Puerto Vallarta is one of those destinations where the geography explains much of its appeal: the Pacific is immediately in front of you, the Sierra Madre rises behind the city, and between them are historic streets, beaches, markets, restaurants and neighborhoods with distinct personalities. It is this combination of Mexican coastal culture, accessible nature and sophisticated tourism infrastructure that has allowed Puerto Vallarta to remain one of Mexico’s most versatile Pacific destinations. |
