Zihuatanejo is a former fishing village set around the bay of the same name, backed by the Sierra Madre del Sur. Although it developed alongside the planned resort of Ixtapa beginning in the 1970s, Zihuatanejo retained a distinctly Mexican character, with its fishing traditions, waterfront streets, local markets, and slower pace. Its pre-Hispanic history reaches back thousands of years, with evidence of settlements and cultural exchange involving several Mesoamerican peoples. During the colonial period, the sheltered bay became part of maritime routes along Mexico's Pacific coast, while fishing, agriculture, and trade remained central to local life. The arrival of Ixtapa as a major tourism development transformed the region, but the two destinations evolved differently. Ixtapa developed around large hotels, golf courses, and planned tourism, while Zihuatanejo preserved much of its traditional urban fabric and relationship with the sea. That contrast remains one of the defining characteristics of the destination today. What Makes Zihuatanejo Unique Zihuatanejo became internationally recognizable through The Shawshank Redemption, in which the character Andy Dufresne dreams of a new life in the Mexican coastal town. The reference helped reinforce the image of Zihuatanejo as a place associated with escape, freedom, and the sea. Another chapter of the city's unusual cultural history is connected to the so-called Zihuatanejo Project, associated with Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert, later known as Ram Dass, during the 1960s. The area's reputation as a place for alternative lifestyles has since become part of its broader cultural mythology. One of the most striking landmarks today is El Partenón de Zihuatanejo, the enormous mansion built in the late 1970s by former Mexico City police chief Arturo “El Negro” Durazo. After decades of abandonment, the property was officially inaugurated as the El Partenón Zihuatanejo Cultural and Tourism Center on November 6, 2024. The former mansion now contains exhibition spaces, classrooms, cultural facilities, gardens, a performance stage, and spaces for concerts and other events. The transformation gives a notorious symbol of political excess a new public and cultural purpose. |

Highlights You Can't Miss Playa La Ropa is one of Zihuatanejo's signature beaches, stretching along the bay with calm sections suitable for swimming and a wide range of water activities. Restaurants and beach clubs line the shore, making it possible to spend most of the day by the water without leaving the area. The waterfront and Paseo del Pescador provide another essential experience. The pedestrian route connects the central beach area with restaurants, shops, galleries, and viewpoints over the bay, particularly atmospheric around sunset. For travelers interested in local culture, the Zihuatanejo International Guitar Festival has become one of the city's best-known annual cultural events. The 2026 edition took place from March 7 to 14, with concerts at the main pier, Casa de la Cultura, restaurants, beaches, and other venues around the region. The festival combines music with local dining and community spaces, making it as much a cultural experience as a concert series. |

| The Best Way to Access the Place Zihuatanejo is served by Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo International Airport, making the destination relatively easy to reach from major Mexican cities and selected international markets. The airport is approximately 15 kilometers from central Zihuatanejo, and the journey generally takes around 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic and the final destination. Once in town, walking is one of the best ways to experience the central area, particularly the waterfront, Paseo del Pescador, Playa Principal, and surrounding streets. Zihuatanejo has a warm tropical climate throughout the year. Zihuatanejo's greatest strength is the balance between tourism and local life. Unlike a destination built almost entirely around large resorts, the city still feels connected to its fishing heritage, neighborhood restaurants, waterfront traditions, and community events. That combination makes it one of the more distinctive places to experience Mexico's Pacific coast. |
