Downtown Los Angeles (DTLA) is the historic core of a city that has grown from a small settlement into one of the world’s major metropolitan areas. Los Angeles was founded in 1781 by 44 settlers from 11 families of Native American, African, and European heritage, establishing the original pueblo near what is now El Pueblo de Los Angeles and Olvera Street. The arrival of the railroads in the 1870s accelerated Downtown’s commercial growth, while the 20th century brought grand theaters, department stores, government buildings, and the rise of the Financial District. After decades of decline and disinvestment, Downtown entered a major period of redevelopment in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, bringing new housing, restaurants, cultural institutions, hotels, and public spaces.
What Makes Downtown Los Angeles Unique DTLA brings together several distinct urban worlds within a relatively compact area: the historic core around El Pueblo and Olvera Street, the Financial District and Bunker Hill, the Broadway Theater District, Little Tokyo, the Arts District, and the Fashion and Jewelry districts. The cultural landscape includes Walt Disney Concert Hall, The Broad, MOCA, Grand Park, Union Station, Angels Flight, and numerous historic theaters. The area is also one of the most practical parts of Los Angeles for exploring without a car, with Metro rail, buses, DASH service, and major regional connections converging downtown. |

Highlights You Can't Miss Grand Central Market is one of DTLA's essential stops. Opened in 1917, it is Los Angeles' oldest and largest public market and today has more than 40 vendors representing the city's remarkably diverse food culture. It is open daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., although individual vendor hours vary. Olvera Street and El Pueblo provide a different perspective on Los Angeles. The historic district commemorates the city's 1781 origins and includes museums, historic buildings, restaurants, and shops. Olvera Street itself opened as a Mexican marketplace in 1930 and remains one of the city's best-known cultural attractions. |

Little Tokyo, the Arts District, Broadway, and the historic theater district offer additional experiences ranging from Japanese American culture and contemporary galleries to restaurants, nightlife, live entertainment, and some of the city's most distinctive historic architecture. Options for Further Exploration The Broad offers free general admission to its contemporary art collection, although advance reservations are recommended. The museum is next to Walt Disney Concert Hall, making Bunker Hill one of the city's strongest concentrations of major cultural attractions. Union Station is another important stop, both as an architectural landmark and as a transportation hub connecting Metro, Metrolink and Amtrak services. Grand Park provides open space between the Civic Center and Bunker Hill, while Angels Flight Railway offers a short historic ride connecting Hill Street with California Plaza. The Last Bookstore, the Fashion District, Little Tokyo and the Broadway theaters provide further reasons to explore beyond the major museums. |

| The Best Way to Get There DTLA is approximately 17 miles (27 km) from Los Angeles International Airport, although actual travel time can vary substantially with traffic. Public transportation is increasingly practical: travelers can use Metro connections from LAX via the LAX/Metro Transit Center and continue toward Downtown, while Union Station provides regional rail connections. Metro's regular fare is currently $1.75, with free transfers within two hours when using the TAP system. Once downtown, walking and Metro are often the most convenient ways to move between major attractions. The area has a dense concentration of restaurants, hotels, museums, entertainment venues, and cultural districts, making it one of the few parts of Los Angeles where visitors can realistically build a full day without relying entirely on a car. |
||||
| Practical and Safety Tips DTLA is a large and rapidly changing urban district, so conditions can vary considerably from one block to another. Travelers should stay aware of their surroundings, particularly after dark, use well-trafficked routes, and plan transportation in advance. Comfortable walking shoes are useful because many of the major attractions are within walking distance of one another, but the distances between some districts can still be substantial. Checking museum hours, reservations, event schedules, and individual business hours before visiting is advisable. Grand Central Market, for example, is open daily, but its individual vendors maintain different schedules. |
