Located in the far northwest of Washington state, near the Canadian border and between the mainland and Vancouver Island, the San Juan Islands are an archipelago of more than 170 islands and islets. The four main islands are San Juan, Orcas, Lopez, and Shaw. Surrounded by the waters of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the Salish Sea, these islands combine dense forests, rocky cliffs, historic farms, and charming seaside towns.
Historically, the territory was inhabited by Indigenous peoples such as the Lummi before the arrival of European explorers in the 18th century. In the 19th century, the archipelago was the site of the curious conflict known as the "Pig War" (1859), a border dispute between the United States and the United Kingdom that, surprisingly, resulted in no human casualties. Finally, in 1872, German Emperor Wilhelm I arbitrated the case and awarded the islands to the United States. Today, they are part of the state of Washington and are recognized for their strong environmental culture and relaxed lifestyle. What Makes San Juan Islands Unique One of the San Juan Islands' greatest natural attractions is the presence of resident orcas, especially visible near San Juan Island. Lime Kiln Point is considered one of the best places in the world for whale watching from the mainland. In addition, the archipelago is famous for its low light pollution, allowing for spectacular stargazing. Another interesting fact is that many of the islands operate with a rural dynamic: there are farmers' markets, local organic products, and a strong artistic tradition. Orcas Island, for example, is known as the "green jewel" for its mountainous topography and alternative cultural spirit. The pace of life is relaxed; here, there are no large commercial chains dominating the landscape, but rather independent cafes, art galleries, and small bookstores along the waterfront. Highlights You Can't Miss Visiting the San Juan Islands means connecting with nature. Whale watching, whether by kayak or on a boat tour, is practically a must and costs between $90 and $130 USD per person, depending on the season. A visit to Moran State Park on Orcas Island is also a must, where you can hike up Mount Constitution for panoramic views of the archipelago. Park entrance fee is around $10 USD per vehicle. In Friday Harbor, the main town on San Juan Island, restaurants specializing in fresh seafood abound. Dishes like wild Pacific salmon, local oysters, and clam chowder typically cost between $20 and $35 USD per main course. For something more casual, a burger and fries will set you back $18–$22 USD. There are also artisanal bakeries where a breakfast of coffee and pastry might cost around $12–$15 USD. Among the most popular celebrations are the San Juan County Fair in August and music and art festivals throughout the summer, which attract both residents and tourists. |

Options for Further Exploration
In addition to its natural landscapes, the archipelago offers interesting historical and cultural sites. San Juan Island National Historical Park preserves the American and British camps associated with the Pig War. Admission is free. You can also visit the Whale Museum in Friday Harbor, dedicated to the research and conservation of orcas; admission is approximately $15 USD for adults. On Orcas Island, the aforementioned Moran State Park is ideal for hiking and biking. Near the archipelago, on the mainland, lies the town of Anacortes, the main ferry departure point, and from there you can also explore Deception Pass State Park, which has an entrance fee of around $10 USD per vehicle. These locations complement the experience with more scenic routes and breathtaking views of the Pacific Northwest. The Best Way to Get There From Seattle to Anacortes, it's approximately 170 km by road, taking between one and two and a half and three hours by car. From there, ferries to Friday Harbor take about an hour, costing approximately $20 USD per passenger and $60–$75 USD if traveling with a vehicle. There are also short flights from Seattle that take about 45 minutes, though they are more expensive, with fares starting at $150 USD. Accommodation ranges from cozy bed and breakfasts for $150–$220 USD per night to boutique hotels that can exceed $300 USD in peak season. Summer, between June and September, is the best time to visit due to the dry, mild weather, with average temperatures between 15 and 25°C. Winter is cold and rainy, but quieter and more affordable. Renting a bicycle or car is recommended for getting around the islands, although limited public transportation is also available. Practical and Safety Tips It's advisable to book ferries and accommodation in advance during the summer months, as demand is high. Wearing layers is essential, even in summer, because the weather can change quickly. Respect for wildlife is key; it's forbidden to get too close to orcas and other marine species. The islands are generally very safe, with low crime rates, but it's always wise to take basic precautions, especially when using water sports. It's also important to support local businesses and follow environmental regulations, as conservation is central to the islands' identity. |
