Wild Nature and Volcanic Soul

By Estefanía Muriel for Ruta Pantera on 3/20/2026 7:35:49 AM

Located on the east coast of Hawaii's Big Island, Hilo is a city that blends lush tropical nature with a strong Hawaiian cultural identity. Unlike other tourist destinations in the archipelago, Hilo retains a more local feel, is less crowded, and remains deeply connected to its volcanic environment. Hilo's history dates back to ancient Polynesian settlements that arrived on the islands over a thousand years ago, bringing with them agricultural and spiritual traditions. With the arrival of European missionaries in the 19th century, the city transformed into a key commercial center, especially thanks to its sugar plantations. However, its location has also made it vulnerable to natural disasters, such as the tsunamis of 1946 and 1960, which profoundly impacted its urban and social development.

What Makes Hilo Unique

Hilo is known as one of the rainiest cities in the United States, which explains its lush vegetation and spectacular waterfalls. This humid climate creates almost jungle-like landscapes that contrast with the nearby volcanic terrain. Furthermore, the city is situated at the foot of two of the world's most famous volcanoes: Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea, the latter considered sacred in Hawaiian culture. Another interesting fact is that Hilo hosts the renowned Merrie Monarch Festival, one of the state's most important cultural events, dedicated to the traditional hula dance and celebrated every spring. This city is also an excellent location for stargazing due to the low light pollution in its surroundings.
Highlights You Can't Miss

Visiting Hilo is an immersion into unique natural experiences. One must-do is exploring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, where you can walk on ancient lava flows and observe active craters; the entrance fee is around $30 USD per vehicle. A visit to Rainbow Falls, a waterfall famous for the rainbows that form in the sunlight, is also essential. As for food, Hilo offers delicious and affordable options. Restaurants like Cafe Pesto serve dishes with fresh seafood and local flavors, with prices ranging from $15 to $30 USD. Another must-try is Hawaiian poke or loco moco at Pineapples Island Fresh Cuisine, where a dish can cost between $12 and $25 USD. Regarding festivities, in addition to the Merrie Monarch Festival, local celebrations such as King Kamehameha Day, which honors Hawaiian history and traditions, are highlights.

Options for Further Exploration

Surrounding Hilo are some of Hawaii's most breathtaking natural wonders. Akaka Falls State Park, located about 1.5 miles away, boasts a stunning waterfall cascading over 400 feet; admission is approximately $5 per person. Also worth a visit is Liliuokalani Gardens, a free waterfront Japanese garden. For science enthusiasts, the Imiloa Astronomy Center offers interactive exhibits on astronomy and Hawaiian culture, with admission around $20. These attractions complement the natural experience with culture, history, and learning.
The Best Way to Get There

Hilo is served by Hilo International Airport, primarily connected by domestic flights from Honolulu, about 350 km away, with a flight time of approximately 50 minutes. It's also possible to explore the island by car; renting one costs between $50 and $90 USD per day and is the best way to get around freely. For accommodation, there are hotels like the Grand Naniloa Hotel, with prices ranging from $150 to $250 USD per night. The climate is tropical rainforest, with temperatures between 20 and 28 °C year-round, so it's always advisable to bring a raincoat. The best time to visit is generally between April and October, when the rains are less intense.
Practical and Safety Tips

Traveling to Hilo is safe, but it's important to take basic precautions, especially in natural areas. It's recommended to respect signs in volcanic parks, as some terrain can be unstable or emit hazardous gases. It's also advisable to wear appropriate footwear for hiking and carry plenty of water. Due to frequent rain, roads can be slippery, so drive with caution. Finally, it's important to respect the local culture, especially in places considered sacred, such as Mauna Kea, by maintaining a responsible and mindful attitude.
