Zacatecas, Mexico

By Estefanía Muriel for Ruta Pantera on 9/9/2026 8:38:39 PM

Zacatecas rose from the discovery of rich silver deposits in 1546 to become one of the most prosperous mining centers of New Spain. Built across the steep slopes of a narrow valley between Cerro de la Bufa and Cerro del Grillo, the city developed around the wealth generated underground. Today, that history remains visible in its churches, mansions, plazas, narrow streets, and buildings constructed from the distinctive pink volcanic stone known as cantera rosa.

The Historic Centre of Zacatecas was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1993. Its remarkable combination of religious and civic architecture reflects the wealth generated by silver mining during the 16th and 17th centuries, while its Baroque buildings reveal a fascinating meeting of European and Indigenous decorative traditions. The Cathedral Basilica, constructed between 1730 and 1760, dominates the historic center and is one of the city's defining landmarks. (UNESCO)

But Zacatecas is more than a preserved colonial city. Its identity still revolves around mining, music, religious traditions, museums, festivals, and the dramatic landscape surrounding the historic center. The result is a destination where the past is not confined to museums—it remains part of everyday life.
What Makes Zacatecas Unique

The city's most unusual attraction is literally beneath its streets. Mina El Edén began operating in 1586 and remained active for almost four centuries before closing in 1960. It opened to visitors in 1975 and today offers guided tours through its underground galleries, where visitors can see geological formations, mining equipment, and a collection of rocks and minerals. (Zacatecas Tourism)

The experience becomes even more unusual after dark. A nightclub known as Mina's Club operates inside the former mine, reached by descending underground by a small train. The city government describes it as one of Zacatecas' most distinctive nightlife experiences, turning an industrial space once associated with hard labor into an unexpected place for music and dancing. (Municipality of Zacatecas)

Zacatecas is also unusually rich in museums. The Rafael Coronel Museum, housed in the former Convent of San Francisco, is particularly notable for its extensive collection of Mexican masks, folk art, and objects connected to traditional celebrations. The Pedro Coronel Museum, meanwhile, brings together an international collection of art in a former Jesuit college. Together, they show that the city's cultural identity extends far beyond its mining history.

Highlights You Can't Miss

The Cathedral Basilica of Zacatecas should be the starting point for exploring the historic center. Its pink-stone façade is one of Mexico's most spectacular examples of late Baroque architecture, filled with carved figures, vegetation, geometric details, and Indigenous and European influences. Rather than simply photographing the façade, take time to walk around the surrounding streets and plazas to understand how the cathedral dominates the historic urban landscape.

A visit to Mina El Edén provides the clearest connection between modern Zacatecas and the industry that created its wealth. The tour descends into the mountain and follows sections of the original mining complex, offering a physical sense of how deeply silver shaped the city's history.

The Zacatecas Cable Car is another essential experience. Originally inaugurated in 1979 as Mexico's first cable car of its kind, the attraction now operates with seven modern cabins, including one with a glass floor. The 642-meter route crosses above the historic center between Cerro del Grillo and Cerro de la Bufa, offering an aerial perspective of the city's unusual topography. Current published fares are 100 Mexican pesos for a one-way adult trip and 160 pesos for a round trip. (Zacatecas Tourism)

Cerro de la Bufa is more than a viewpoint. It is closely connected to the Mexican Revolution and particularly to the Battle of Zacatecas of 1914, one of the decisive military confrontations of the Revolution. The hill combines panoramic views, monuments, a chapel, and historical references, making it one of the best places to understand the city's strategic importance.

Culture, Festivals And Local Life

Zacatecas becomes especially interesting during its festivals. The Festival Cultural Zacatecas is one of the country's important cultural events and in 2026 celebrated its 40th anniversary with hundreds of artistic and cultural activities spread across theaters, plazas, museums, streets, and historic buildings. (Government of Zacatecas)

September is another particularly important month. In 2026, the Feria Nacional de Zacatecas takes place from September 4 to 20 as part of the city's 480th anniversary celebrations. The program combines concerts, cultural activities, gastronomy, entertainment, and traditional festivities. (Government of Zacatecas)

The Morisma de Bracho, traditionally held at the end of August, is another of the city's most distinctive traditions. Large-scale performances involving Christians and Moors have been part of Zacatecas' cultural life for generations. In 2026, the celebration attracted more than 50,000 participants and spectators, demonstrating that this is not simply a performance created for tourists but a living community tradition. Options To Continue Discovering

The Pedro Coronel Museum is worth visiting for its collection of European, African, Asian, and American art, while the Rafael Coronel Museum offers a much more distinctly Mexican experience through masks and popular art. The museums work particularly well together because they reveal two very different sides of Zacatecas' cultural identity.

Another worthwhile experience is a traditional callejoneada zacatecana, a walking celebration through the historic streets accompanied by musicians, songs, and local traditions. It is one of the most social ways to experience the city's architecture after dark rather than simply viewing it during the day.

Travelers with additional time can also explore La Quemada, one of the most important archaeological sites in the region, located outside the city. The site offers a different perspective on Zacatecas by moving the story of the region far beyond the Spanish colonial period.
The Best Way To Access The Place

Zacatecas is served by General Leobardo C. Ruiz International Airport, located approximately 20 kilometers north of the city center rather than 76 kilometers as previously stated. The airport connects the region with domestic destinations and selected international markets, although flight schedules vary by season and airline.

For travelers arriving from other Mexican cities, Zacatecas is also accessible by long-distance bus and road. Once in the city, the historic center is compact enough to explore largely on foot. Comfortable shoes are particularly important because the streets are often steep and paved with stone.

The city has a broad range of accommodation, from hostels and smaller guesthouses to boutique hotels occupying restored colonial buildings. Rates vary substantially according to festivals, weekends, holidays, and major events, so travelers should check current prices before booking.

For comfortable walking and outdoor sightseeing, spring and autumn are particularly pleasant. The high-altitude climate can produce significant temperature changes between morning, afternoon, and evening, so even warm-season travelers should be prepared for cooler nights.
Practical And Safety Tips

Wear comfortable shoes with good grip when exploring the historic center, Cerro de la Bufa, and the mining attractions. The combination of steep streets, stairs, and uneven stone surfaces can make walking more demanding than it first appears.

Bring layers rather than relying on a single heavy garment. Zacatecas sits at high elevation, so mornings and evenings can feel considerably cooler than sunny afternoons.

For Mina El Edén and other popular attractions, check schedules and availability before visiting, particularly during holiday periods and major festivals. The same applies to special nighttime experiences and cultural events, whose schedules may change throughout the year.

At night, remain in active, well-lit areas and use established transportation services when traveling beyond the historic center. During large festivals, expect crowds and temporary changes to traffic and pedestrian routes.

Zacatecas is ultimately a city best understood from two directions: above ground, where its pink-stone architecture, churches, plazas, museums, and traditions tell the story of colonial wealth; and underground, where the old mines reveal the difficult industry that made that wealth possible. Few destinations in Mexico make that connection between landscape, mining, architecture, and living culture so visible.
