Ride the White Rim Trail by Bike

Experience a Guided 3- to 5-Day Expedition Through Canyonlands National Park, One of the World's Premier Mountain Biking Destinations

Discover one of North America's most iconic mountain biking adventures on the White Rim Trail, a 160-kilometer (100-mile) loop located within Canyonlands National Park, near Moab, Utah. Several specialized tour operators offer this fully guided expedition, combining adventure, endurance, and breathtaking scenery in one of the American Southwest's most spectacular desert landscapes.

Throughout the journey, riders follow historic dirt roads winding beneath towering red-rock cliffs, across vast mesas, and through dramatic canyons carved over millions of years. Depending on the operator, the experience is available as a 3-, 4-, or 5-day expedition, with all logistics arranged so participants can focus entirely on the ride.

What Is the Experience Like?

Designed for experienced mountain bikers, this expedition offers the opportunity to tackle one of the world's most celebrated backcountry cycling routes. Each day combines long-distance riding with challenging climbs, gravel descents, exposed switchbacks, and famous slickrock sections, all led by professional guides.

Unlike traditional cycling tours, the White Rim Trail passes through an extremely remote wilderness area with no hotels, restaurants, or services along the route. Tour operators provide complete logistical support, including campsites, meals, and support vehicles, creating a true multi-day adventure.

Location

The White Rim Trail is located within Canyonlands National Park in southeastern Utah, just outside the adventure town of Moab. The route circles much of the park's Island in the Sky District, renowned for its sweeping views of the Colorado and Green Rivers, towering sandstone cliffs, and dramatic desert scenery.

Highlights Along the Route

During the expedition, riders visit many of Canyonlands National Park's most famous landmarks, including:

• Island in the Sky.
• Musselman Arch.
• Monument Basin.
• Airport Tower.
• Candlestick Tower.
• White Crack Overlook.
• Murphy Hogback.
• Shafer Trail.
• Scenic overlooks above the Colorado and Green Rivers.

Wildlife sightings frequently include golden eagles, peregrine falcons, coyotes, mule deer, desert foxes, lizards, and the park's iconic desert bighorn sheep.

What's Typically Included?

Most guided expeditions include:

• Professional mountain biking guides.
• Premium mountain bike rental (or the option to bring your own bike).
• Support vehicle throughout the expedition.
• Luggage and camping equipment transportation.
• Fully equipped campsites.
• All meals during the tour.
• Drinking water and hydration support.
• Basic bicycle repair tools and mechanical assistance.
• Required park permits.

Duration

Tour operators typically offer 3-, 4-, and 5-day itineraries, covering between 30 and 60 kilometers (19-37 miles) per day, depending on the schedule and group pace.

Difficulty Level

Advanced. The route features more than 2,100 meters (7,000 feet) of cumulative elevation gain and requires excellent physical fitness, previous mountain biking experience, and the ability to ride long distances in desert conditions.

Recommended Gear

Participants should bring a certified helmet, hydration system, cycling gloves, protective eyewear, breathable clothing, mountain biking shoes, sunscreen, and personal items. Most operators provide the remaining expedition equipment.

Best Time to Go

The ideal riding seasons are March through May and September through October, when temperatures are cooler and trail conditions are at their best. Summer temperatures frequently exceed 100°F (38°C), while winter can occasionally bring snow or icy trail sections.
