The Gabriela Mistral Museum is located in the city of Vicuña, in the heart of the Elqui Valley in northern Chile, and is dedicated to the life and work of Lucila Godoy Alcayaga, known worldwide as Gabriela Mistral. Inaugurated in 1957 and expanded in subsequent decades, the museum stands very near the birthplace of the poet, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1945. The space not only preserves personal belongings, manuscripts, and first editions of her work, but also serves as a cultural center and a point of reflection on education, Latin American identity, and the humanist thought that marked her legacy. Its understated architecture harmonizes with the semi-desert landscape of the valley, reinforcing the connection between the author and the land that inspired much of her writing. What Makes the Gabriela Mistral Museum Unique One of the museum’s most unique aspects is that it houses objects donated by governments and diplomats from various countries, reflecting Gabriela Mistral’s international career as an educator and consul. Furthermore, the poet expressly requested that her remains be laid to rest in Montegrande, a small nearby town, making the area a unique literary and heritage circuit in Chile. The museum offers free admission to the general public, reinforcing its educational and accessible nature. |

Highlights You Can’t Miss A visit to the museum should be complemented by a stroll through Vicuña’s main square and a walk to Gabriela Mistral’s birthplace, located just a few minutes away. For dining, it’s recommended to visit local restaurants like El Aji Seco del Poeta or Halley, where you can sample traditional dishes such as pastel de choclo (corn pie), cabrito al jugo (roasted kid goat), or empanadas criollas, with prices ranging from $12 to $18 USD for a main course. Throughout the year, Vicuña celebrates traditional festivals and cultural activities related to the grape harvest and poetry, especially in April, the author’s birth month, when public readings and literary gatherings take place. |

| The Best Way to Get There Vicuña is located about 60 kilometers from La Serena, the main city in the Coquimbo Region. From there, you can reach it by car in approximately one hour or by intercity bus for around US$5. The town offers a variety of accommodations, from simple hostels for US$30 per night to boutique hotels and rural lodges that can cost between US$90 and US$120. Getting around Vicuña is mostly done on foot or by local taxi. The best time to visit is between September and April, when the weather is dry, mild, and the skies are clear, ideal for both visiting the museum and enjoying stargazing. |

| Practical and Safety Tips It is recommended to bring sunscreen, water, and light clothing during the day, as temperatures can exceed 25°C, and a jacket for the evening. The museum is a quiet and safe space, as is the city in general, although it is always advisable to keep an eye on your belongings. For a more complete experience, consider combining your visit with local cultural activities or guided tours of the Elqui Valley. |
