Vancouver, United States

Nature and Heritage on the Pacific Frontier

By Estefanía Muriel for Ruta Pantera on 3/5/2026 10:30:37 AM

Vancouver is a city located in Washington state, just north of the Columbia River and across the river from Portland, Oregon. Although many people confuse it with the famous Canadian city of Vancouver, this American city has its own distinct identity and a history deeply intertwined with the exploration of the Pacific Northwest. It was officially established in 1857, but its significance began decades earlier, when in 1825 the Hudson's Bay Company founded the historic Fort Vancouver as a fur trading center. Since then, the site has evolved from a trading post to a military outpost and later to a residential and business hub connected to the Portland metropolitan area. Today, it combines historical heritage, lush natural surroundings, and a relaxed atmosphere typical of the American Northwest.

What Makes Vancouver Unique

An interesting fact is that Vancouver, Washington, is one of the oldest cities in the state and was briefly considered as a possible territorial capital. Furthermore, it is part of the Portland metropolitan area, which allows it to benefit economically from not having a state income tax, unlike Oregon, something that attracts many residents. The Columbia River not only marks the natural border between the states but is also one of the most important rivers in North America due to its length and hydroelectric power generation. The city also has a strong military presence thanks to the nearby Portland Air Force Base and its history as a strategic outpost. Despite its modern growth, Vancouver maintains a strong environmental awareness and privileged access to green spaces, which defines the local lifestyle.

Highlights You Can't Miss

A visit to Fort Vancouver National Historic Site is essential for understanding regional history; admission to the historic area typically costs around $10 USD for adults. A stroll along the Vancouver Waterfront offers spectacular views of the Columbia River and contemporary restaurants. Among the recommended options is WildFin American Grill - Vancouver Waterfront, ideal for trying Pacific salmon or fish and chips for prices ranging from $20 to $35 USD per dish. Also noteworthy is Twigs Bistro and Martini Bar - Vancouver, with pasta, steak, and cocktail options in a similar price range. Local cuisine features fresh seafood, craft beer, and wines from the nearby Willamette Valley. Popular celebrations include the Independence Day Fireworks Show on July 4th, with fireworks displays over the river, and summer festivals featuring live music and farmers markets.

Options for Further Exploration

Nearby is the stunning Columbia River Gorge, a natural canyon with waterfalls and scenic trails. Access is free in many areas, although some parking may cost between $5 and $10 USD. About a 30-minute drive away is Portland, known for its vibrant cultural scene, independent bookstores, and alternative food scene. You can also visit Mount St. Helens, a volcano famous for its 1980 eruption; access to the volcanic monument has fees of approximately $5 to $8 USD per vehicle in certain areas. For history buffs, the Pearson Air Museum, located within the historic district, offers aviation-related exhibits for around $10 USD. Local parks like Esther Short Park, the oldest in the state, are free and perfect for a stroll.

The Best Way to Get There

Vancouver is located approximately 15 kilometers from downtown Portland and about 266 kilometers from Seattle. Portland International Airport is the closest airport, about a 20-minute drive away. From there, you can travel by car, taxi, or rideshare service for an average cost of $30 to $50 USD. It is also accessible by road via Interstate 5. For accommodations, hotels like the Hilton Vancouver Washington offer rooms from $150 to $220 USD per night depending on the season, while more budget-friendly options range from $100 to $140 USD. Transportation within the city can be done by car, bicycle, or C-TRAN buses. The best time to visit is between June and September, when the weather is dry and mild, with temperatures between 20 and 28 °C. Winters are rainy and cool, with temperatures ranging from 2 to 10 °C.

Practical and Safety Tips

Vancouver is considered a safe and peaceful city, although, as with any urban destination, basic caution is advised in poorly lit areas at night. A waterproof jacket is essential, especially outside of the summer months, as rain is frequent for much of the year. Renting a car is recommended if you plan to explore the surrounding natural areas, as public transportation doesn't always connect to remote locations. It's also advisable to book accommodations in advance during the summer, the peak tourist season. Respect for nature is key, as many protected areas require adherence to strict environmental regulations.
